(AFX UK Focus) 2008-03-24 18:37 GMT: IRS to help retirees, veterans, low-income workers apply for stimulus payment

WASHINGTON (Thomson Financial) - The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on Saturday March 29 will set up hundreds of locations at which retirees, veterans and low-income workers who do not file income tax returns can apply to receive their economic stimulus payment.

The one-day event, called "Super Saturday," will take place in 320 locations in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. At each location, IRS employees will help individuals prepare a 1040 A form soley to receive their stimulus payment. Field assistance personnel will also visit nursing homes and other similar locations to help qualifying individuals file.

Millions of Americans who do not pay federal income taxes may be eligible for a 300 usd economic stimulus payment (600 usd for married couples) if they have at least 3,000 usd in qualifying income.

Free tax filing for stimulus checks

Thanks to the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, more than 130 million American households will receive economic stimulus payments beginning in May, but for some, the cost of having a tax assessor prepare their tax return, which is about $100, is not even worth the trouble of getting their stimulus payment. That is why Debra White Finke & Associates is offering to do 2007 returns for free - no strings attached - to those who are only filing to receive their stimulus check.Donna Wilson-Orozco, a partner of Debra White Finke & Associates, said they found this as a way that they could give back to the community after all the community has done for them.

Orozco says the only way to get a stimulus payment is to file a federal tax return for 2007, even if you don't normally file. Although some filers, such as high-income filers, will not qualify for a stimulus payment, most will.Low-income workers, those who receive social security benefits or veterans' disability compensation, pension or survivors' benefits from the Department of veterans affairs in 2007 will be eligible to receive a payment of $300 ($600 on a joint return) if they had at least $3,000 of qualifying income.

IRS to help non-filers get checks

The Internal Revenue Service will open some 320 offices on Saturday, March 29, to help low-income people including some retirees and veterans get the checks they are eligible for under the economic stimulus act passed by Congress in January.

The tax agency said Monday that community and advocacy groups such as the AARP and United Way of America will also make special efforts on that day to ensure that people who don't ordinarily file tax returns don't miss out on the payment.

Under the stimulus act, people are eligible to receive at least $300, with married couples getting $600. Many households also can get an additional $300 for each qualifying child younger than 17.

But people must file a tax return to receive the payment, raising concerns that those who don't usually need to file will be overlooked.
